Cell Component Functions
Terms in this set (19)
plasma membrane (cell membrane)
To protect the cell from its surroundings and to regulate what goes in-n-out
Site of chemical reactions
Nucleus / nuclear membrane (control centers)
Houses genes that control cellular structure and function ; Nuclear mem. Contains pores, that controls the movement of materials in-n-out of the nucleus (control center)
Site of protein synthesis.
Mitochondria (Power house)
Where sugar is converted into energy for the cell to use. ( Power House)
Synthesis of ribosomal subunits.
Protects the genes during DNA replication/cell division.
Modify, sort, and package macromolecules for cell secretion.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
Associated with protein synthesis (Proteins enter e.r for further processing ,then sent to golgi for final processing)
Enzymes that oxidize (removes hydrogen atoms from substances)
Primarily responsible for locomotion (movement) , either for the cell itself or for other substances/objects past the cell.
Breakdown damaged,faulty, or unneeded proteins.
Lysosome (garbage disposal)
To remove waste as well as destroying a cell after it dies.
A microscopic hair-like organelle used by cells and microorganisms for movement. ( whipping motion for locomotion)
Storage site for food and other compounds.
Growth of miotic spindle during cell division
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) (NO RIBOSOMES ATTACHED)
1) Contains enzymes that allows for synthesis of fatty acids and steroids.
2) In LIVER : Detoxifies drugs ,alcohol, pesticides, carcinogens, etc.
