Terms in this set (20)
frequency distribution
an organized tabulation of the number of individuals located in each category on the scale of measurement
Range
the difference between the highest and lowest scores in a distribution
grouped frequency distribution
A frequency distribution where scores are grouped into intervals rather than listed as individual values.
Class interval
A group of scores in a grouped frequency distribution.
Apparent limits
The score values that appear as the lowest score and the highest score in an interval.
Histogram
A interval or ratio scale that measures numerical scores. To construct a histogram, you list the numerical scores along the x-axis, and then draw bars about each X value so the height of the bar corresponds to the frequency
Polygon
A interval or ratio scale that measures numerical scores using dots
Bar graph
Essentially the same as a histogram, except that spaces are left between adjacent bars
Relative frequency
an estimate on a certain frequency because the numbers are ever changing
Symmetrical distribution
it is possible to draw a vertical line through the middle so that one side of the distribution is a mirror image of the other
Skewed distribution
the scores tend to pile up toward one end of the scale and taper off gradually at the other end
Tail of the distribution
the section where the scores taper off toward one end of a distribution
Positively skewed
a skewed distribution with the tail on the right hand side because the tail points toward the positive end of the x-axis
Negatively skewed
a distribution that trails off to the left
rank or percentile rank
the percentage of individuals in the distribution with scores equal to or less than the particular value
Percentile
when a score is identified by its percentile rank
Cumulative frequency
Represent the accumulation of individuals as you move up the scale
Cumulative percentage
shows the percentage of individuals who are accumulated as you move up the scale
Interpolation
A process that will allow you to estimate the intermediate values
stem and leaf display
a technique for organizing data that provides a simple alternative to a grouped frequency distribution table to graph
