The WHO definition of health makes reference to the concept of wellbeing. Wellbeing and health are related, and are often described as how well an individual is living. Wellbeing is strongly liked to all the DIMENSIONS of health.
Health and wellbeing relates to the state of a person's physical, social and emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing and is characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels, happy, healthy capable.
Relates to the functioning of the body and its systems, and in which a person is able to perform their daily tasks without physical restrictions. These can be readily observed and measured. e.g. physical fitness, body weight, blood cholesterol levels, blood pressure, absence of disease/illness, energy levels and functioning of the body's systems.
Interacting with other people is an essential part of being human.
Social health and wellbeing is concerned with the ability to form meaningful relationships with others as well as being able to adapt appropriately to different social situations.
The ability to recognize, understand and effectively manage and express emotions as well as the ability to display resilience (strong, tough, hardy; quick to recover, buoyant, irrepressible.)
Refers to the state of a person's mind or brain and relates to the ability to think and process information. Optimal mental health and wellbeing enables an individual to positively form opinions, make decisions and use logic.
Positive mental health and wellbeing includes managing day-to-day activities with low levels of stress, having positive thought patterns and high levels of confidence and self esteem.
Ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the mind and conscience of human beings. It includes the concepts of hope, peace, a guiding sense of meaning or value, and reflections of a person's place in the world.
It can also related to organised religion, a higher power and prayer, values, a sense of purpose in life, connection or belonging.
