Terms in this set (11)
Variability
provides a quantitative measure of the differences between scores in a distribution and describes the degree to which the scores are spread out or clustered together
Range
the distance covered by the scores in a distribution, from the smallest score to the largest score
Deviation score
The distance from the mean. Deviation score: X-u
Population variance (o^2)
represented by the symbol o^2 and equals the mean squared distance from the mean. Population variance is obtained by dividing the sum of squares by N
Population standard deviation
represented by the symbol o and equals the square root of the population variance
Sum of squares (SS)
the sum of the squared deviation scores
Sample variance (s^2)
represented by the symbol s2 and equals the mean squared distance from the mean. Sample variance is obtained by dividing the sum of squares by n-1
Sample standard deviation (s)
Represented by the symbol s and equal the square root of the sample variance
Degrees of freedom (df)
determine the number of scores in the sample that are independent and free to vary. For sample variances, degrees of freedom are defined by df=n-1
Biased statistic
a sample statistic where the average value of the statistic is equal to the population parameter. The average value of the statistic is obtained from all the possible samples for a specific sample size
Unbiased statistic
a sample statistic where the average value of the statistic either underestimated or overestimated the corresponding population parameter
