What is basal nuclei
the nucleus in the CNS, the functioning part o neuron cell bodies
What are the functions of Basal nuclei
Play an important inhibitory role in motor control
-Inhibiting muscle tone
-selecting and maintaining purposeful motor activity; suppressing less important
-help monitor and coordinate, slow contractions associated with posture and support
Pathway linking the cerebral cortex, basal nuclei, and thalamus
-Thalamus positively reinforces voluntary motor behavior initiated by the cerebral cortex.
-Basil nuclei modulate the activity by causing an inhibitory effect on the thalamus- eliminate the antagonist or unnecessary movements. It also inhibits motor activity by acting through neurons in the brain stem.
What does the basal nuclei (gray matter) consist of
Caudate nucleus
Putamen
Globus Pallidus
Claustrum
diensephalon
The rostral portion of the brain stem that connects the midbrain with the cerebral hemispheres and serves as an important relay station for sensory information- where he CSF flows through
Thalamus
-relay station for preliminary procession of sensory input; takes the important impulses and sends them to the somatosensory cortex and to other regions of the brain
- awareness of sensation but cannot identify location or intensity
Hypothalamus
Important for homeostasis- even the voluntary actions associated with homeostasis
Limbic's system
-not a structure, but a ring of forebrain structures that surround the brain stem and are interconnected by intricate neuron pathways
-Key role in emotion (feeling and physical responses)
- basic behavioral patterns and motivated behaviors
What structures is included in the Limbic's system
cerebral cortex, the basal nuclei, thalamus, and hypothalamus
psychiatric disorders
abnormal activity of neurotransmitters without lesions;
neurological disorders
lesions that may also have abnormal neurotransmitters
