the study of shapes and measurements.
protractor
tool used to approximate the measure of an angle.
compass
tool used to create arcs and circles.
straightedge
ruler with no numbers
point
a location in space that has no size or shape. Is often represented using a dot and is named with a capital letter.
line
a straight continuous of an infinite number of points. Has no width.
plane
a flat surface with an infinite length and width, but no depth. Extends infinitely in all directions.
coplanar lines
are two or more lines that are located in the same plane.
skew lines
are also called non-coplanar lines that are not located in the same plane.
line segment
a portion of a line that includes two points and all the points between those two points.
endpoints
the points where the line segment ends.
arc
made by compass
congruent line segments
line segments that have the same length.
congruent
to have the same size, shape, and measure.
intersection
the point at which two or more lines or arcs intersect, or cross.
ray
a portion of a line that begins infinitely in one direction.
angle
formed by two rays that share a common endpoint.
sides of an angle
are in two rays.
vertex
the common endpoint the two rays share.
degrees (')
unit of measure for angles.
acute angle
angle whose measure is greater than 0' but less than 90'.
right angle
angle whose measure is equal to 90'.
obtuse angle
angle whose measure is greater than 90' but less than 180'.
straight angle
angle whose measure is equal to 180' and form a line.
congruent angles
two or more angles that have equal measures.
bisect
to divide into two equal parts.
angle bisector
if a ray is drawn through the vertex of an angle and divides the angle into two angles of equal measure, or two congruent angles, the ray is called an angle bisector.
supplementary angles
two angles with a sum of their angle measure is equal to 180°
complementary angles
two angles with a sum of their angle measure is equal to 90'
perpendicular
two lines, line segments, or rays intersect to form 90' angles.
midpoint of a segment
a point that divides the segment into two congruent segments, or two segments of equal length.
segment bisector
a line, line segment, or ray that divides the line segment into two line segments of equal measure, or two congruent line segments.
perpendicular bisector
a line, line segment, or ray that intersects the midpoint of a line segment at a 90-degree angle.
adjacent angles
two angles that share a common vertex and share a common slide.
linear pair
are two adjacent angles that have noncommon sides that form a line.
vertical angles
two nonadjacent congruent angles that are formed by two intersecting lines.
