Anansi: Here comes someone now. Sh!
One, upcountry from the city of Accra, in Ghana, Ama, a country woman, took her basket and went out to get garden to dig up some yams to take to market.
Anansi: While she was digging, one of her yams seemed to talk to her... "Go away and leave me alone!"
Ama, the country woman, jumped up in amazement! Did you talk? Did you say something?
Anansi: It wasn't I who spoke to you. It was the yam. The yam says leave him alone.
Ama became very upset because her dog had never talked before, and she didn't like his tone besides, so she broke off a branch from a tree to whip her dog.
Anansi: Put that branch down, said the tree.
The woman was very upset with the way things were going, and she started to throw the branch away.
Anansi: Ama, put me down softly.
She put the branch down gently in her basket.
Anansi: Hey, take that thing off of me!
This was enough. The frightened farm woman started to run for her village. Ah!
Kweku: What's the hurry woman?
My yam talked. It said, leave me alone! Then my dog talked. When I went to whip the dog with a branch, the tree spoke and said put that branch down! And my basket said, take that thing off me!
Weaver: Where are going in such a rush?
Everything talked! My yam talked, my dog talked. Tree said put that branch down! Branch said do it softly! And my basket said, take that thing off of me!
Woman: Are you chasing a gazelle?
Everything talked. Yam talked to me. Dog talked. Tree talked and said put that branch down, branch said do it softly, and basket said take that thing off of me.
Anansi: Soon they'll reach the Ashanti village. Isn't this a good trick?
They ran down the main street of the village to the house of the chief of the Ashanti tribe.
Kweku: Hurry!
We must see the chief immediately.
Servant: The people began to recite their troubles.
Everything talked! I went out to my garden to dig yams. Yam talked, my dog talked. Tree said put that branch down, branch said do it softly, basket said take that thing off me.
Chief: ... You'd better all go back to work before I punish you for disturbing the village... go!
So the people went away.
