fraction
A way to describe a part of a whole or a part of a set by using equal parts. It is expressed as a numerator and a denominator.
improper fraction
A fraction that has a value equal to or greater than 1 whole .The numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.
equivalent fractions
Fractions that have the same value.
unlike fractions
Fractions that have different denominators.
benchmark fraction
Fractions that are commonly used for estimation.
unit fraction
A fraction that has 1 as its numerator.
numerator
The number written above the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are described in the fraction.
denominator
The quantity below the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are in the whole.
common denominator
For two or more fractions, a common denominator is a common
multiple of the denominators.
like denominators
Denominators in two or more fractions that are the same.
unlike denominators
Denominators that are not equal.
decimal fraction
A fractional number with a denominator of 10 or a power of 10. Usually written with a decimal point.
simplify
To express a fraction in simplest form.
lowest terms
When a fraction is expressed with the fewest possible pieces, it
is in lowest terms. (Also called simplest form.)
simplest form
When a fraction is expressed with the fewest possible pieces, it is in simplest form. (Also called lowest terms.)
mixed number
A number that has a whole number (not 0) and a fraction.
reasonableness
An answer that is based on good number sense.
