Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) Theory
states that the repulsion between sets of valence electrons around the atoms in a molecule causes these sets to be oriented as far apart as possible.
How to calculate molecular geometry according to VSEPR Theory:
count the number of atoms bonded to the central atom and the number of lone pairs around the central atoms
Linear
2 atoms bonded to central atom, 0 lone pairs
Trigonalplanar
3 atoms bonded to central atom, 0 lone pairs
bent or angular
2 atoms bonded to central atom, 1 lone pair OR 2 atoms bonded to the central atom, 2 lone pairs
tetrahedral
4 atoms bonded to central atom, 0 lone pairs
trigonalpyramidal
3 atoms bonded to the central atom, 1 lone pair
Trigonalbipyramidal
5 atoms bonded to the central atom, 0 lone pairs
Octahedral
6 atoms bonded to central atom, 0 lone pairs
