What in your experience has prepared you to effectively lead this organization, why will FedEx be more successful with you in this position
Motivationally Fit
Describe a face to face meeting where you needed to influence an opinionated person who disagreed with your perspective
Package hander was needed to fill a spot where someone called in. Package handler was upset and kept pulling e-stops to show how un happy he was. I went over to package handler and told him how much I appreciated his work and how thankful I was that he was here to fill this position today. There were no more problems in the area for the rest of the day. The following day package handler came to me and apologized for his actions and was very thankful someone recognized his hard work.
Tell me about the most challenging presentation you successfully delivered
(Communicates Effectively) I used to participate in school plays and I played the lead role in Neil Simon's "The Nerd". I found this very difficult playing the main role in a play, I had only been going to the school for 2 months and knew very few people. After long hours of studying lines and guidance from director I was praised all year long for giving one of the best performances in the school ever.
Even if we have a fundamental understanding of financial terms and concepts, we can find ourselves over our head when the discussion becomes too in depth, tell me about a time when this happened to you
()When I first moved to HD I felt so lost and confused. Its the same as ground except we do all the moves before we start the sort where as with ground the moves would be done after or towards the end. That and the learning of a new system made me feel like it was all over my head. With my managers approval I was able to talk with other managers (team leads at the time) and do some more research as to best practices and ways to improve on the foundation we already had. After ironing out all the wrinkles I had improved HD to having a 20 min dispatch after last package was called. 10 mins max after belt walk.
Sometimes we spend a good deal of time and energy coaching an employee competency area only to realize the person may not be able to meet the expectations of the area, tell me about a time when you experienced this situation
(Demonstrates Accountability) In this kind of organization and its history I have found may package handlers and trainers take the same approach of "if they don't get it after 2 days they never will." Time and time again I have come across this and I have decided to break the cycle. I started with a package handler Mitchell, I pick out this package handler because he was the worst we had and I worked with this guy correcting every wrong move for 2 weeks and in down time explained more about the sort and how the network works. After the 2 weeks I could put Mitchell up against anyone in the building at the time and know he could hold his own. Mitchell still works in Kalamazoo on the outbound. A consistent employee that any manager can count on.
Explain a time where you proactively sought to build a relationship with someone in your organization with whom you don't normally work with
While working as a dispatcher in line haul I formed a relationship with an operations coordinator "Paul Redburn" and found time to learn the aspects of his job and what it entails as well as taught him what I do. This proactive cross-training made things easier when Paul got promoted and someone was still able to maintain the plan and changes after he left. This has even crossed over to current time and place.
Think of a customer of yours; what have you done to better understand their business or function, what have you done to meet their expectations
While working with contractor Bob Baird we have come up with a solution to late arrivals and the dispatching of his routes. With the time frame his drivers have to work in we have come up with the idea that we will flex all missing packages to a sup route for him that his business contact will then shuttle out to the drivers when they appear. This way we can service our customers and not have to hold dispatch of his drivers due to different circumstances
Tell me about a time when you were responsible communicating an important objective to key players in your organization, discuss how you conveyed these objectives and monitored the achievement and results
peak planning with Jeremy. or Running van lines with battle of the vans.
Some people work best by focusing on one task for long periods of time while others prefer to just go back and forth from task to task throughout they day, which of these best describe your work style provided examples to support your answers
Organizes effectivly
Tell me about a time when you realized you needed more data in order to make a solid recommendation or draw a sound conclusion.
Solves problems through Innovation
Some stake holders want to be informed about all activities while others are only concerned about milestones. Tell me about a time when you used different approaches of informing people based on their preferences.
