Ruthless leader of the Lombards. Defeated the Gepids! Killed Cunimund and his son. Kept Cunimund's skull as drinking cup. Took Rosamund (Cunimund's daughter) as his wife. Murdered by Rosamund and Helenacuss.
Desired to be Lombard king through total war. Wanted to take the fight directly to the pope, hoping to take back all of Italy.

New leader of the Lombards after Alboin's death. Rules by fear and murder. Kills many potential rivals or threats to the crown, including most of Luitprand's family.
Leader of the Gepids who was decapitated by Alboin. Also witnessed his son's death. Father of Rosamund.
Cunimund's daughter who was taken by Alboin to be his wife. She always wanted revenge for her father and brother's deaths. She gained that revenge by murdering Alboin. However, it was short-lived as she and her lover, Helenacuss were killed in a murder-suicide.
Leader of the Franks who converted to Christianity in 496. He prayed and was victorious. Later, united the Franks into one kingdom and made an allegiance with the Church.
Leader of the Franks who reunited Western Europe for the 1st time since the Roman Empire. Crowned "Holy Roman Emperor" in 800 by Pope Leo III for crushing a mob in Rome.
Frankish Dynasty from 751-987 starting under Pepin the Short and continuing under Charlemagne and his heirs.

Charles Martel "THE HAMMER"
Christian hero for his victory at the Battle of Tours. Led the Franks to even greater power and glory. Son was Pepin the Short. Grandson was Charlemagne.
Germanic people who lived and held power in Gaul. Their leader was Clovis and he would later bring Christianity to the region. By 511 the Franks had united into one kingdom and they controlled the largest and strongest parts of Europe.
Prince of the Lombards, who would eventually be king for 31 years. He watched many of his family members be butchered in front of his own eyes. Will seek vengeance on Airipert II!
Pepin the "Short"
Charles Martel's son who started the Carolingian Dynasty from 751-987. Father of Charlemagne.
Charles the "Bald", Louis the German, Lothair
Three grandsons of Charlemagne who signed the Treaty of Verdun in 843,thus dividing the Empire into 3 kingdoms.
Came from Scandinavia, also called Northmen or Norsemen, and Danes. Sea warriors, they built amazing ships that held 300 warriors, could hold 30 tons. Raided villages and monasteries. Also traded and farmed. Journeyed to Russia and Constantinople. Gradually excepted Christianity.

Social Structure of Feudalism
King/queen, priest, lord/knight, vassal, serf
people who own the land that the nights protected and that the peasants lived on and that the service were forced to work on; only the king's power was above these people; they would protect the peasants but keep their land
men or women who were the poorest members of society, peasants who worked the lord's land in exchange for protection
