How have Job Interviews traditionally been conducted?
job interviews have been around forever. has always been apart of hiring/ selection process. but sometimes they are time consuming and inefficient.
Traditional job interviews
meandering (unstructured conversation, no direction that conversation was suppose to go with an applicant) ask interviewees different questions vague unplanned questions. ex: "can you tell me something about yourself"
interviewer doesn't take notes and then will make a general judgment call about applicants suitability for job.
qualitative assessments with no ratings!
Structured Interviews
most efficient to predict job performance. attempt to treat every interviewee the same way interviewers are trained ask job relevant questions (that are planned in advance, and same for all individuals) the response to each question is measured using BARS (behavioral anchors rating scale) Can have multiple interviewers (to make sure have inter-rater-reliability) then applicants wait until the end to ask any questions.
what kinds of questions are asked during interviews?
Behavioral interview questions
Situational interview questions
Behavioral interview questions
ask applicants about past experience. based on idea that the best predictor of future behavior is the past, focus on how effectively they demonstrated job-related KSAO's/task - did they do any research before
ex: "Can you give me an example when you had to...?"
Situational interview questions
ask applicants about future oriented job situations. focus on how effectively an interviewee could address realistic job-related situations. are specific incidences
ex: "Can you tell me what you would do in this situation..."
What types of questions are illegal?
How old are you? when did you graduate/born?
can't ask about age. (ADEA- Age discrimination in employment act- protects people 40+)
Can not ask/ be asked:
Have you ever been arrested? (can ask about felonies)
Do you go to church? = could lead to discrimination
are you U.S. Citizen? = could lead to discrimination
Cannot ask about a disability: (ADA- Americans with Disability act- makes its illegal to discriminate based on disabilities; mental/ physical) also can not ask if have seen/seeing a psychologist/psychiatrist
Are there Race differences in Job Interviews
Some differences exist:
on average white interviewees rated slightly higher than black/hispanic
But overall results can vary:
With job complexity: for more complex jobs, black/hispanics interviewees were rated higher than white americans
With type of interview (tradition/structured): structured lead to smaller gap in group differences - allows for less biases
how to prepare for job interview
1. Do HW about the company- find out what organization is about, what qualities they look for in an employee
2. Learn job description; focus on KSAO's and how you demonstrate them (how you accomplish tasks)
3. Practice Mock interviews= STAR technique: Situation, task, action, results
4. come up with your own questions to ask
