The dance of the market women goes back more than one hundred years when they began dancing between the stands to break the stereotype of their grumpiness.
Ein Wagen von der Linie 8
As a tradition, the market women open their performance with the song originally sung by Weiß Ferdl. Intended as a satire on a München's tram, die Trambahn, this song became for the locals a symbol of a bygone era and a declaration of love to this streetcar. Weiß Ferdl rode Linie 8 tram when he commuted from the suburbs of München to the city. Route 8 operated from 1935 until 22/11/1975 and connected some northern boroughs of München with the city center.
Weiß Ferdl (28/6/1883 - 19/6/1949)
He was one of the most famous Bavarian humorous folksingers and folk actors, sang it in the 1940s.
