The Eight Parts of Speech
This set tells you: 1) The name of the part of speech. 2) The definition of the part of speech. 3) An example for the part of speech.
Terms in this set (8)
It names a person, place, thing or idea.
(Three main types - common, proper and gerunds.)
Example: boy , library, ball, truth
It expresses an action or names a state of existence.
Example: run, write, love .... be, is, are, was, were, appear
It takes the place of a noun.
Example: he, she, it, you, they, us ...
It modifies (provides more information about) verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. They answer the questions How? When? Where? How Often?
Children learn languages easily. - How
He speaks French very well. - How
They saw the recently discovered comet. - When
They went upstairs. - Where?
It modifies (give more information about) nouns and pronouns.
Blue house, twelve apples, racing car
It shows relationships such as direction, time, location or ownership.

It connects words and word groups and show the relationship between the connected elements. There are four kinds:
Coordinating - and, but, so, or, etc.
Correlative - not only ... but also, etc.
Subordinating - because, when, if, etc.
Conjunctive - however, therefore, etc.
It is a word or phrase that expresses surprise or emotion. They can be strong or weak.
