Beethoven's influence on successive composers
Beethoven is indeed a great composer in the Classical period, mastering the Classical style and bridging the Classical period to the Romantic period. In many ways, Beethoven was a composer ahead of his time, and his ideas in music writing has influenced many composers after him in the orchestral genre.

Studied in Busseto and Milan - supported by patron and married patron's daughter.
Known for opera - wrote operas with political overtones - Nationalist.
Critics bladed his scandalous subjects - seemed to condone rape, suicide, and "free love"
Italian, Late-Romantic Composer (1858-1924)
Known primarily for his operas.
Became wealthy and world famous due to the popularity of his music.
Made use of Exoticism, setting his operas in foreign places.
Short melodies, simple phrases, and realistic dialog.
German, Mid to late Romantic Composer (1813-1883)
Studied in Germany, later moved to Paris, returned to Germany, and finally settled and succeeded in Munich, Bavaria.
Lived large off of others - ran up debts.
Wrote in many styles, and was famous for his operas.
