Geosynchrous (GOES)
Image the same area on earht 24/7
Sunsynchronous
image the earth at same time each day (most do not acquire images of entire earth each day)
Swadth width
size of the strip of land imaged by the satellite, controls size of image and varies
Spatial resolution
high vs coarse resolution data
AVHRR
low resolution satellites, NOAA, sun synchronous, bands (visible, NIR, thermal)
GOES
low resolution, NOAA, geosynchronous, bands (visible, thermal)
Landsat
medium resolution, synonymous with remote sensing, started 1972, Landsat 1-7, sensors (MSS, TM, ETM+)
Spot
French, medium resolution, made famous in 1986 for having imagery of power plant, could take image at an angle, smaller swadth width
Indian Remote sensing (IRS)
medium resolution, similar to SPOT HRG sensor
MODIS
medium resolution, 36 bands, images collected two satellites every day, swadth width 2330 km
ASTER
medium resolution, swath width 60km, (VNIR, SWIR, TIR)
Ikonos
high resol, US satellite, 1999, panchromatic resolution 1m, 35 day repeat frequency
Quickbird-2
high resol, US, 2001, 0.61m, 1-3 day repeat frequency
Orbview-3
high resol, US, 2003, 1m, <3 day repeat freguency
Worldview-1
high res,US, 2007, 0.5m, 1.7 day repeat frequency
GeoEye-1
high res, US, 2008, 0.41m*, 1-3 day repeat frequency
Worldview-2
high res, US, 2009, 0.46m*, 1.1 day repeat frequency
FORMOSAT-2
high res, Taiwan, 2004, 2m, 1 day repeat frequency
EROS-B
High res Israel, 2006, 0.7m, 3-4 day repeat frequency
KOMPSAT-2
high res, South Korea, 2006, 1m, 3 day repeat frequency
Cartosat-2
high res, India, 2007, 0.8m, 4 day repeat frequency
Multispectral
airborne visible/infrared data, similar to high resolution data, collect under clouds
Hyperspectral
visible/infrared airborne data, 20-400 bands, detailed reflectance spectrum for each pixel
Orthorectification
like statistical coordinate transformatioin except that it makes use of elevation data for greater precision
Statistical Coordinate interpretation
georeferencing short match one image to another
Coordinate transformation
image already has coordinates associated w/ them (directly into data )
Ratio
basic type of transformation, greatly reduces impact of shading
Vegetation indice
most common type of mathematical transformation, vegetation (abundance, health, species), joined isovegatation lines, parallel isovegation lines
Supervised classification
provide the computer program with examples of the classes you want, the computer then assigns pixels to the class they most resemble.
Unsupervised classification
do not give examples, looks for similar groups of pixels
Confusion Martix
assesses accuracy of a classification
UN resolution relating to remote sensing of Earth from Outer Space
1986, 15 principles nations should abide by
World Meteorlogical Organization Resolution 40
1995, requires all weather satellite data to be free and unrestricted
Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995
applies to US data, all data collected by US satellites mu be available for free or at cost
National Security Residential Directive 27
2003, give guidance on allowable specification for commercial satellite systems
DOW chemical Company vs US
1986, EPA collected aerial photography of the plant and used in a lawsuit, DOW claimed constituted search w/out warrant, DOW lost the case
Mainframe
Used by large corporations, multitude people long on at once
Workstation
powerful computer for scientific/technical purposes, used by one person
Personal
personal use, less powerful than workstation
Server
designed to hold data that computers can access
Motherboard
what controls everything, brain of the computer
Central Processing Unit
controls processes running
Heat sink
transfers heat, cools
Hard drive
primary storage
Networking protocols
need a network interface, http, tcpip
ethernet
really fast speeds, made data transfer easier
