Terms in this set (13)
Hypothesis
A theory or premise, a claim about the numerical value of a population parameter, such as the population mean, proportion or variance
Hypothesis testing
A technique for testing a claim about a population parameter using statistical principles
Alternative hypothesis
Denoted by Ha, a mathematical statement that describes a population parameter, the hypothesis that the researcher is aiming to gather evidence in favor of; also referred to as the research hypothesis
Null hypothesis
Denoted by Ho, the mathematical opposite of the alternative hypothesis; will always include equality
Test statistic
The value used to make a decision about the null hypothesis; it is derived from the sample statistic
Statistically significant
Describes a sample statistic if it is far enough away from the presumed value of the population parameter to conclude that it would be unlikely for the sample statistic to occur by chance if the null hypothesis is true
Mnemonic for statistically significant
"If the p-value is LOW, the null hypothesis must GO"
Level of significance
Denoted by alpha, the probability of making the error of rejecting a true null hypothesis; in a hypothesis test alpha equals one minus confidence
Type I error
Rejecting a true null hypothesis
Type II error
Failing to reject a false null hypothesis
