Key Concepts:
Terms in this set (29)
Probability
likelihood that a particular event will occur
Experimental Probability
The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials, or times that the activity is performed.
Theoretical Probability
The ratio of the number of equally likely outcomes in an event to the total number of possible outcomes
Independent Event
an event that is not affected by another event.
Dependent Event
an event who's outcome does depend on the outcome of a previous event
Compound Event
An event consisting of two or more simple events.
Sample Space
the set of all possible outcomes
Sample Space can be displayed using
lists, tables, and tree diagrams
Interquartile Range (IQR)
the difference between the first and third quartiles
Measures of Center (Central Tendency)
mean and median
Measures of Variability
range and IQR
Impossible
an event cannot occur
Likely
An event probably will happen
Median
the middle score in a distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it.
Impossible
An event that cannot occur.
Certain
An event will definitely happen.
Even Chance
The event has an equally likely chance of occurring.
Unlikely
An event that will probably not occur.
Minimum
the smallest number in a set of data
Maximum
the largest number in a set of data
Lower Quartile (Q1)
the middle number between the smallest number and the median of the data set.
Upper Quartile (Q3)
the median of the upper half of the data.
Suppose you roll a single number cube, translate "P(3)" into words
probability of rolling a 3
Skewed Left
Skewed Right
Independent or Dependent: A number cube is rolled twice
independent
Independent or Dependent: Two cards are drawn, one after the other, from a deck of cards. The first card is not replaced.
dependent
Independent or Dependent: Picking a red M&M from the bag, eating it, then picking a green M&M.
dependent
Independent or Dependent: Picking a red M&M from the bag, replacing it, then picking a green M&M.
