Terms in this set (17)
What is atherosclerosis?
It is a plaque build-up in the artery wall
What is a cardiac arrest?
It is another term for a heart attack (when an artery gets blocked)
What is the pericardium?
Double-walled sac that encloses the heart
How can atherosclerosis cause a stroke or a heart attack?
It can eventually cause a stroke or heart attack if the blood vessels gets too narrow or closes up. There will be no blood flow
What are the substances that plasma contains?
Nutrients, hormones, and ions
What substance do platelets contain?
Molecules that initiate clotting
What is the substance that RBCs contain?
What is the substance that WBCs contain?
Cells that protect against invaders
What blood type is the universal donor?
What blood type is the universal recipient?
Why is the lower chamber on one side of the heart bigger than the other?
It needs to pump blood into the aorta through the aortic valve which will require higher pressure
What is the function of heart valves?
They transport blood from the atrias to the ventricles in the heart
Why doesn't heart muscle need to be stimulated by neurons to contract?
It is constantly working but it does not need to rest, it has more mitochondria and has a constant supply of blood to bring it oxygen and nutrients
What is an artery?
Arteries are the blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues of the body
What is a capillary?
Very thin blood vessels that bring nutrients and oxygen to tissues and remove waste products
What is a vein?
Blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart
Why is systolic blood pressure higher than diastolic blood pressure?
Systolic = the top number/highest blood pressure when the heart is squeezing and pushing the blood round the body
Diastolic = the bottom number/lowest blood pressure between beats
