Key Processes of Human Fertilization
1) Capacitation
2) Acrosome Reaction
3) Cortical Reaction
Capacitation
The biochemical changes in a sperm, post ejaculation, which improve its mobility
Acrosome Reaction
The release of enzymes which soften the jelly coat
Cortical Reaction
Hardening of the jelly coat post fertilization to prevent polyspermy
Cholesterol Coat
The coat surrounding the sperm, which dissolves due to the chemicals released by the uturus
Acrosome Reaction Process
1) Sperm pushes through follicular cells of the corona radiata to bind to the jelly coat
2) Acrosome vesicle fuses with the jelly coat and releases enzymes which soften the matrix
3) Sperm pushes through the softened jelly coat and binds the proteins on the egg membrane
4) Membrane of the egg and sperm fuse, then the sperm nucleus and centriole enter the egg.
Cortical Reaction Process
1) Cortical granules will release enzymes to harden the jelly coat
