12 Angry Jurors

That's your privilege. How about you?
I dont know. I started to be convinced, you know, with the testimony from those people across the hall. Didn't they say something about an argument between the father and the boy around seven o'clock that night? I mean, I can be wrong.
They heard the father hit the boy twice and then saw the boy walk angrily out of the house.
What does that prove?
Well, it doesn't exactly prove anything. It's just part of the picture. I didn't say it proved anything.
All right. Forget it. It don't mean anything.
How about sitting down?
It's a ridiculous waste of time!
Let her do it.
Hand me chair, please. All right. This is the bedroom door. How far would say it is from here to the door of this room?
I'd say it was twenty feet.
It's my guess that the old man was trying to get to the door, heard someone racing down the stairs and assumed that it was the boy.
I think that's possible.
Who's got an idea?
I think maybe we should try another vote. Mr. Foreman?
I'd like to know why you changed your mind. And why you did. There are six men here who think that we may be turning a murderer loose in the streets. Emotion won't do. Why?
It would seem that the old man did not see the boy run downstairs. I do not think it likely that old man heard someone scream, "I'm going to kill you." Old men dream. And if the boy did scream that he was going to kill, then we have the authority of this woman to prove that it might not really mean he's going to kill.
What about you? What do you think now?
I'm not just sure what I think. I want to talk some more. At first I thought guilty, then I changed. Now—I'm sort of swinging back to guilty.
Okay, let it be more.
That's not funny.
All right. There's your angle. Take a look at it. Down and in. That's how I'd stab a taller man in the chest, and that's how it was done. Take a look at it, and tell I'm wrong.
Down and in. I guess there's no argument.
Did you ever stab a man?
Of course not.
I'm sold on "reasonable doubt."
I think I am, too.
I wanted more talk, and now I've had it.
Ten minutes of six.
You don't suppose they'd let us go home and finish it in the morning. I've got a kid with mumps . . . .
