Calling the opponent a hypocrite—saying they can't adhere to a ridiculous standard related to what they support
Allegory
A story in which each aspect of the story has a symbolic meaning outside the tale itself

Repetition of consonant sounds
Aphorism
a pithy observation that contains a general truth
Colloquialism
A word or phrase (including slang) used in everyday conversation and informal writing but that is often inappropriate in formal writing (y'all, ain't)
Denotation
the literal meaning of a word
Ex. You are a dog"
Connotation
feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning
Hypophora
raising a question then proceeding to answer it
Inference
A conclusion one can draw from the presented details.
Onomonopia
The use of words or sounds which resemble the sounds they describe. (ex boom, psst)
pedantic
tending to show off one's learning
Synecdoche
A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole (ex. Nice set of wheels)
Chiasmus
a reversal in the order of words in two otherwise parallel phrases
attribute
Identifies the source of something (ex. Authors of an article give credit to another author about a certain topic)
achronology
Things are told out of order
active voice
The subject of the sentence performs the action (ex. I will clean the house every Sunday)
passive voice
the subject receives the action (ex. The house will be cleaned by me every Sunday)
Narration
telling a story
Analogy
A comparison of two different things that are similar in some way (ex. Like is like a box of chocolates)
Exposition
a comprehensive description and explanation of an idea or theory
dependent clause
A phrase that can't stand alone as a complete sentence.
