Growth spurt
is a rapid increase in height & weight that begins, on the average, at about age 10.5 in girls and 12.5 in boys. (Adult height 6 yrs after G.S.)
Puberty
the onset of sexual maturation - growth of sex organs begin around 11.5 in boys. In girls, the growth spurt typically precedes the approaching puberty.
Menarche
the first menstrual period, occurs between 12.5 and 13 for the average American girl. Individuals vary. Ex. Smokers, heavy drinkers, & heavier girls mature earlier than thin ones.

Imaginary audience
delusions, teens feel they are being watched and judged.
Personal fable
a delusion that they are unique and very important.
Invulnerability
nothing can harm them.
Personality and Social Development
The classical view of adolescence as a period of "storm and stress" full of conflict, anxiety, and tension is not in most teenagers' lives, although there is inevitable stress to handle.
Erikson - Identity V. Role Confusion
12-18 yrs is the process by which a person develops a stable sense of self. Occurs during an intense period of self-exploration called an identity crisis.
Adolescent Peer Relations
They rely on a peer group for social and emotional support.
Cliques
made in early adolescence, unisex, friendship groups change to mixed-sex groups in which short-lived romantic interests are common

increased 600% since 1950. Suicide is related to depression, drug use, & disruptive behavior.
