Neuroanatomy and Brain Terms
Terms in this set (20)
CNS (central nervous system)
includes brain and SC
PNS (peripheral nervous system)
1. cranial nerves and their ganglia
2. spinal nerves, their ganglia, and plexuses
3. efferent and afferent somatic nerves outside the CNS
4. autonomic nervous system (ANS) - sympathetic and parasympathetic
What does the brain consists of?
brainstem, cerebellum, diencephalon, cerebral hemispheres
What makes up the brainstem?
midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata
What makes up the diencephalon?
hypothalamus, infundibulum, optic chiasm
What makes up the cerebral hemispheres?
cortex, white matter, basal nuclei
separates the two cerebral hemispheres
sylvian or lateral fissure
anterior portion separates the temporal from frontal lob
posterior portion separates temporal from parietal lobe
separates frontal and parietal lobes laterally
separates the parietal and occipital lobes medially
separates the occipital lobe into superior and inferior halves
term used to describe the 3 layers of connective tissue covering the brain and spinal cord
outer most meninge, has 4 folds, lines the periosteum of the skull
the middle meninge, surrounds the brain in a loose manner
inner most meninge, covers the contours of the brain, forms choroid plexus in the ventricular system
a system designed to protect and nourish the brain; compromised of 4 ventricles and multiple foramen that allow the passage of CSF
CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
acts as a cushion around the brain and spinal cord and is produced by the choroid plexus of each ventricle
space occupied between the skull and outer dura mater
space occupied between the dura and arachnoid meninges
space occupied between the arachnoid and pia mater that contains CSF and the circulatory system for the cortex
