block the effects of carbonic anhydrase, (slows mvmt of hydrogen ions)--More sodium/bicarb are lost
Ind: adjunct to other diuretics and Narrow angle glaucoma/altitude sickness--can cause alkaline urine/loss of HCO3 buffer

Contraindications

Angle closure glaucoma+ P/L

Fluid/electrolyte imbalances, R/H disease, adrenal cortical insufficiency, Resp acidosis, COPD

Adverse effects-

R/T disturbances in acid/base balance+electrolytes--Metabolic acidosis--hypokalemia--Parasthesia of extremities, confusion, drowsiness.
