a number which multiplies a variable
Equation
a mathematical statement containing an equal sign
Expression
one or a group of terms and maybe include variables, constants and grouping symbols.
Inequality
when things are not equal
Rational Numbers
All integers, fractions, repeating decimals and terminating decimals
Irrational Numbers
A real number that can be written as a nonrepeating or nonterminating decimal.
Sum
The result of addition
Difference
The result of subtraction
Product
The result of multiplication

The result of division
Linear Function
an equation who graph is a straight line. Has a constant rate of change
y = mx + b
Exponential Function
an equation that can increase (grow) or decrease (decay) very quickly
Quadratic Function
an equation who graph is a parabola
y = ax² + bx + c
Absolute Value Function
an equation who graph is v shaped
y = |x|
Square Root Function
an equation who graph is like a check shaped y = √x
Domain
x-values, also known as input
Range
y-values, also known as output
Whole Numbers
Counting numbers starting from 0
{0, 1, 2, 3...
Integers
a positive number, a negative number or zero but not a fraction or a decimal
{... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 ...}
Function
when each input produces exactly one output, also known as x doesn't repeat and the graph passes the vertical line test
System of Equations
a collection of two equation where the solution is the point where the equations intersect
System of Inequalities
a collection of two inequalities where the solution is where the shaded areas intersect
Vertex
the minimum or maximum point on a parabola
Roots
x-intercepts or zeros of a quadratic equation
ax² + bx + c = 0
Axis of Symmetry
a vertical line that cuts the parabola down the middle. x =
Constant
a quantity having a fixed value that does not change, such as a number. Usually the initial value
Commutative Property
When adding or multiplying, numbers may be added or multiplied together in any order
a + b = b + a
Associative Property
When adding or multiplying, no matter how the number are grouped, the answer will always be the same.
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
Distributive Property
When multiplying a number is the same as multiplying its addends by the number then adding the products.
3 (x + 2) = 3x + 6
Quadratic Formula
completing the square
