tornado, flood, landslide
Domain, Division, Province, and Section of GA
Domain- Humid Temperate
Division- Hot Continental, Subtropical, & Marine
Province- Mountains, Piedmont, & Costal
Section- Ridge and Valley
Name some some physiographic land features
mountains, plains, beaches, valleys, etc
What do ecological regions add?
flora and fauna to the region
what are 3 ways that the forest ecosystem can be disturbed by human activities?
mowing, fertilizer, clearcutting
What are the three categories that classify an ecosystem
Producers, Consumers, Decomposers
how is a forest regenerated?
through succession
what are some plants and trees that help restore nitrogen to the soil?
legumes, lychen
how does a forest contribute to air?
it provides clean oxygen for us to breathy by purifying it and soaks up CO2
how does a forest contribute to temperature?
it mediates and cools down temperature through transpiration
how does a forest contribute to noise?
it buffers sound by absorbing it
what are the four layers of the forest?
emergent: birds of prey
canopy: other birds, monkeys
understory: coyotes, squirrels
forest floor: decomposers
what are the four ways to prevent forest regeneration from occurring in croplands, cities, and residential yards?
mowing, impervious surfaces, fertilizers, clearcutting
how does the energy from the sun transfer to animals?
plants get energy from the sun, animals eat the plants, and animals eat other animals
what are three different things to look at when trying to identify a tree?
bark, twigs, location
how does a forest contribute to wildlife?
provides habitats and food for animals
what are the 3 main stages of succession?
primary, secondary, and climax
how does a forest contribute to soil?
it helps prevent erosion with the tree's roots
why is nitrogen so important?
it provides energy for the soil
coniferous forest
cone bearing trees that have needles not leaves, don't shed in winter, home to many birds, squirrels, chipmunks, & bugs
deciduous forest
trees with leaves that shed in the fall, found in the northeastern part of the US, home to birds and small bugs
mixed forest
both deciduous and coniferous trees, home to species found in both deciduous and coniferous forests, type of forest found in Newnan
mountain forest
hosts trees that can handle higher elevation and colder climates (spruce, alder, etc), trees are usually tall, skinny, and needle bearing
rainforest
hosts trees that can handle very hot climates and that need lots of water, home to thousands of species of animals that are ecologically diverse
