What is partial cleaning?
Varnish is a protective and optical function of a painting. Darkened varnish affects perspective, colour and obscures details of a painting. Subdues colouring.

Partial cleaning = remove the layers of varnish uniformly across the whole canvas, stripping back layers but leaving the one closest to the paint layer as to retain some claim to authenticity and originality that being the artists selection, age of the materials, varnish that was first applied. So as to not disturb the paint layers underneath. Keeps materials. Leaves a layer of discoloured varnish. Leaving a patina.
Material value of the work.
belief that you are keeping the painting in a state close to the artist's intention. Desired effects - the varnish as veneer. Belief that arits applied tones to the varnish - part of a continuation of their artistic choices.
