What is blood pressure?
The measure of the force of blood against the walls of the ARTERIES
Blood pressure depends on 4 things. What are they?
volume, force of heart beat, condition of the arteries, distance from the heart
What is systolic blood pressure?
First (Korotkoff) sound you hear, pressure during contraction (Systole) of the ventricles
What is diastolic blood pressure?
Last beat you hear (Korotkoff), relaxation (Diastole) of the ventricles.
What unit of measurement is used when taking a blood pressure?
mmHg (millimeters of mercury)
What equipment is needed to take a blood pressure?
sphygmomanometer and stethoscope
What is in a sphygmomanometer?
cuff, rubber bladder, 2 tubes, pressure gauge
How far above the elbow should the bp cuff be applied?
Which artery is used to take a bp?
What is the anterior space of the elbow called?
Before taking a bp, what should you do first?
Ask your patient's permission
Never take a blood pressure on an arm that has:
IV, paralyzed, injured, mastectomy, burned, fractured, AV shunt
Where should the needle be before starting a bp?
How many alcohol swabs do you use when taking a bp?
2, one for the diaphragm and one for the ears
How is a bp read?
In even increments at eye level
What is textbook perfect blood pressure?
What is high bp?
What is low bp?
hypotension, <100, <60
What is prehypertension mean?
the person is likely to develop hypertension in the future. In between "normal" and "high" bp readings.
What is orthostatic hypotension?
Blood pressure that drops suddenly when sitting or from sitting to standing
How is BP documented?
What could be some reasons why you can get an inaccurate reading?
wrong cuff size, improper wrapping, incorrect arm position, not using the same arm for all readings, not having gauge at eye level, deflating cuff too slowly
How long should you wait before repeating a bp?
1 - 2 minutes
What is stage 1 hypertension?
What is stage 2 hypertension?
What is a hypertensive crisis?
What are Karotkoff sounds?
the heart sounds you hear when taking a blood pressure
How many phases of Korotkoff sounds are there?
What is the palpatory method of taking a blood pressure?
Palpating the radial pulse while inflating the blood pressure cuff. This is done to ensure an adequate level of inflation when the actual measurement is taken. Inflate the cuff until you can no longer feel the radial pulse.
