Terms in this set (17)
independent variable
The experimental factor that is manipulated; the variable whose effect is being studied. Goes on the X axis
dependent variable
The variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable.Goes on the y axis
Scatterplot
a graphical depiction of the relationship between two variables. Dots represent sample data.
line of best fit
a smooth line that reflects the general pattern in a graph
linear relationship
A type of relationship that exists between two variables whose graphed data points lie on a straight line
Exponential line
a curved line shown a rapid level of change
inversely proportional
A term used to describe the relationship between two variables whose product is constant.
directly proprtional
Describes linear relationships,as one amount increases/decreases,
another amount increases/decreases at the same rate.
Gradient( slope)
rise/run. Used to determine the rate of change The steeper the line the higher the gradient(m)
positive gradient
a line that goes up from left to right
negative gradient
A line that slopes down when working from left to right. The rise is negative and the run is positive.
zero gradient
horizontal line
gradient of curved lines
Use the tangent of a line. A tangent is a straight line which touches the curve at one point only. You then find the gradient of this tangent.
strong correlation( linear)
Data that is very close to being a line is a scatter plot graph. There is a linear relationship between variables.
no correlation( linear)
Scatter plot data that shown no obvious pattern between variables
weak correlation( linear)
Scatter plot between strong and no correlation.
correlation coefficient( linear)
A value (r) denoting the strength of a linear relationship on a scatter plot.
