Stanislaus Katczinsky (Kat)
Leader of the group, older and more experienced, he has a unique ability to provide for his troops. Also 40 years old. Dies from a splinter to the head.
Muller
Is very smart and dreams of exams. Carries books with him. Received boots. Also 19 years old.
Tjaden
Is a skinny locksmith. Is the biggest eater of the group. Bed wetter. Also 19 years old.
Paul Baumer
Narrator and main character. He wanted to be a writer/poet. Part of the lost generation. Also 19 years old. Dies on a quiet day at the front.
Albert Kropp
One of Paul's classmates who serves with Paul in the Second Company. An intelligent, speculative young man, Kropp is one of Paul's closest friends during the war. Clearest thinker. Also 19 years old.

Full Beard, experience with women, also 19 years old.
Franz Kemmerich
One of Paul's classmates and comrades in the war. After suffering a light wound, Kemmerich contracts gangrene, and his leg has to be amputated. He died in Chapter 2 at St. Joseph Hospital.
Haie Westhus
One of Paul's friends in the Second Company. A gigantic, burly man, Westhus was a peat-digger before the war. He plans to serve a full term in the army after the war ends.
Detering
One of Paul's close friends in the Second Company. Detering is a young man with a wife and a farm at home; he is constantly homesick for his farm and family.
Kantorek
A pompous, ignorant, authoritarian schoolmaster in Paul's high school during the years before the war. Kantorek places intense pressure on Paul and his classmates to fulfill their "patriotic duty" by enlisting in the army.
Corporal Himmelstoss
A noncommissioned training officer. Before the war, Himmelstoss was a postman. He is a petty, power-hungry little man who torments Paul and his friends during their training.
Joseph Behm
Hesitant to enlist. Eye injury which causes his death running into enemy fire. He is also 19 years old. First character to die.
Gerard Duval
French soldier who is killed by Paul. Paul goes through his wallet and finds out that he is a printer and has a wife and child.
Mittelstaedt
One of Paul's classmates. Mittelstaedt becomes a training officer and enjoys tormenting Kantorek when Kantorek is conscripted as a soldier.
