Management approaches to flooding
Hard engineering - costly, hard impact on the environment. Eg bulding a dam, changing the river channel. Dam - water is controlled, stored and can be used for recreational use and power, expensive, fertility of floodplain reduced like along the river nile.
Modifiying - allows larger amounts of water to flow, away from risk areas, increased risk of downstream flooding cos faster water
Low cost, low environmental inpact.
Afforestation - planting trees around the river channel, leaves and roots intercept water and reduce runoff.
Ecological flooding - flooded in rural areas to avoid flooding in urban areas.
Land use planning - prevent construction in areas in risk of flooding
Should approach change river and floodplain management
