clockwise
in the direction that the hands of a clock move
counterclockwise
in the direction that is opposite of the direction the hands on the clock move
area
The number of square units required to cover a surface.
3 units wide X 3 units high = 9 square units
length (l) X width (w) = area (A) or A = l X w
congruent
Having the same size and shape
quotient
The answer to a division problem.
divisor
the number you divide by;
the number of groups a number is divided into
dividend
a number to be divided by another number;
the amount in each group when a number is divided into groups
remainder
something left over;
the part of the dividend that is left over when the dividend is not evenly divisible by the divisor
denominator
the bottom number in a fraction;
the divisor in a fraction
numerator
the top number in a fraction, which tells how many parts are being counted.
improper fraction
A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.
product
The answer in a multiplication problem; the number you get when you multiply two or more numbers together.
3 X 4 = 12 <-- 12 is the product of 3 and 4.
mixed number
a number made up of a whole number AND a fraction
2 1/3 is a mixed number
7/3 is an improper fraction
operation
a math problem: add (+), subtract (-), multiply (X), divide (÷)
perimeter
the distance around the outside of a figure
side + side + side = perimeter
8 + 9 + 10 = 27; 27 units is the perimeter
proper fraction
a fraction in which the top number (numerator) is less than the bottom number (denominator).

the number on the left is larger than the number on the right
42 > 24 or 3 + 2 > 2 +1

the number on the left is smaller than the number on the right
12 < 21 or 5 + 1 < 1 + 7

the answer when numbers are added together;
