What are the four main macromolecules found in living things? What are their functions?
Carbs-Provides energy and regulates blood sugar Lipids-store energy
Protein-antibodies, enzymes, builds muscle
Nucleic Acid-make up genetic information
Compare Bacteria and Virus Structure and identify how each are treated by a medical professional.
Bacteria- larger, single celled, living, treated with antibiotic,
both- contain DNA, cause disease
Virus-smaller, not living, prevented with vaccine
Compare Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cell structure. Where are they found?
Prokaryotic-Binary Fission, haploid, single celled, single chromosome, found in bacteria
Both- cytoplasm, ribosomes
Eukaryotic- Mitosis and Meiosis, diploid, paired chromosome, found in humans
Regarding cell reproduction, describe how cancer cells are different from normal cells.
Cancer cells grow and divide uncontrollably and aren't restricted to growing past boundaries, thus creating a tumor. They are also in different shapes and sizes and have an abnormal chromosome number
Compare and define the following terms: Gene, Chromosome, Amniocentesis and Karyotype
Gene-segment of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific trait.
Chromosome- threadlike structures made of DNA molecules that contain genes.
Amniocentesis- the sampling of amniotic fluid using a hollow needle inserted into the uterus, to screen for developmental abnormalities in a fetus.
Karyotype-A picture of all the chromosomes in a cell arranged in pairs, used to look for abnormalities
Compare Mitosis and Meiosis
Mitosis-4 stages + Interphase, in somatic/body cells, produces two diploid daughter cells, chromosome number stays the same.
Meiosis-8 stages plus Interphase, in sex cells, produces 4 haploid daughter cells, chromosome number is halved
Compare DNA and RNA
DNA- deoxyribose sugar, double stranded, ATGC,
Both-nucleotides, sugar, bases
RNA-ribose sugar, single stranded, AUGC
Starting with DNA, identify the correct order of molecules involved in protein building.
DNA, mRNA, tRNA, amino acids, protein
Describe or show how human sex cells determine gender.
The sperm cell contains either and x or y gamete, and the female gamete is x, whichever one fertilizes the egg first, determines the gender.
Identify the reactants and products of photosynthesis and respiration.
reactants-light energy, water, CO2.
Products- ATP, CO2, Water
