Dorsal (posterior)
toward the back of the organism.
Ventral (anterior)
toward the front of the organism.
medial
toward the middle, closer to the midline of the body.
lateral
away from the middle, farther from the midline of the body.
superficial
closer to the surface of the body.
deep
farther from the surface of the body, toward the interior of the body.
superior
towards the head, a point of reference higher than the comparison point.
inferior
farther from the head, toward the feet.
proximal
referring to a point on a limb that is closer to the trunk than another point.
distal
referring to a point that on a limb that is farther from the trunk than another point.
cranial
toward the head.
caudal
toward the tail.
sagittal plane (median plane)
plane through the long axis of the body at the midline that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
parasagittal plane
Any plane parallel to the sagittal plane that divides the body into unequal right and left parts.
frontal (coronal) plane
A plane perpendicular to the sagittal plane that bisects the body into anterior and posterior portions.
transverse (horizontal) plane
a plane that separates the body into superior and inferior parts, also called cross-section.
