Epiphysis
the end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft.
epiphyseal line
(in adults) marks the point of union were the epiphysis meets the diaphysis.
metaphysis
the narrow portion of a long bone between the epiphysis and the diaphysis. (contains the growth plate.)
diaphysis
the shaft or central part of a long bone.
compact bone
denser material used to create much of the hard structure of the skeleton. forms the cortex, or hard outer shell of most bones in the body.
medullary cavity
the central cavity of bone shafts where red bone marrow and/or yellow bone marrow is stored.
cancellous (spongy or trabecular) bone
found at the ends of long bone. (also pelvic bones, ribs, skulls, and the vertebrae in the spinal column.)
yellow bone marrow
Produces fat, cartilage, and bone.
red bone marrow (myeloid tissue)
red blood cells, platelets, and most white cells arise here.
periosteum
a dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the surfaces of the joints.
nutrient foramen (vascular channel)
small tunnels in the cortex. contain nutrient arteries that contribute to the blood supply of the bone.

Some of the funniest videos on YouTube show cars in uncontrolled slides on icy roads, especially icy hills. Here is an example of such a slide. A car with an initial speed $v_0=10.0 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}$ slides down a long icy road with an inclination of $\theta=5.00^{\circ}$ (a mild incline, nothing like the hills of San Francisco). The coefficient of kinetic friction between the tires and the ice is $\mu_k=0.10$. How far does the car take to slide to a stop if we assume that it does not hit anything along the way?
physics
A wave packet describes a particle having momentum p. Starting with the relativistic relationship $E^{2}=p^{2} c^{2}+E_{0}^{2}$, show that the group velocity is $\beta c$ and the phase velocity is $c/ \beta$ (where $\beta$ = v/c). How can the phase velocity physically be greater than c?
environmental science
Which of the below is a major advantage of urbanization?\ a. Cities serve as centers of economic development and jobs.\ b. Less land is directly affected by the concentration of people in cities.\ c. Pollution is concentrated in cities.\ d. Cities are generally warmer and rainier than surrounding country sides.\ e. Cities have larger ecological footprints.
chemistry
Use a reference source, such as the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, to find the experimental boiling point of benzene.
