Interactions with the paradox catch 22
Catch 22 is found when ex P.F.C. Wintergreen tells Yossarian that he is in a catch 22 scenario because the flight 27 air missions allow him to only demands foty missions but colonel Cathcart raised the number of missions to fifty- five and he must obey his colonel or he is in trouble. Another Catch 22 scenario is with Major major. Major Major is selected by an IBM computer to be major as he enters the war. His pastime had always been known to stick with him for being known as Henry Fonda, and named Major Major. for once he is treated fairly and has friends until he is called by colonel Cathcart for being a Major and he had to start his duties, once his friends found out he was then condemned for outranking his friends that they turned his back and judged the realization that his face looks like Henry Fonda. Then, he closes off his office and demands no interactions with anyone because of his insecurities. Once Mj. Major starts his job, he gets bored and decides to sign classified objects as "Washington Irving" which sends the CID man to investigate this fraudulent act. This is a Catch 22 scenario because if he gets caught signing papers with "Washington Irvings" name, then he will be in trouble, if he does not do this, then he is back to being sad and depressed.
Bureaucracy: When the needs of people seem simple, it is always an illogical way for things to be met. In this case, bureaucracy is found in many parts of Catch 22 because the system of war is so dense and complicated that it leads people to doubt progress. In the book, the men are forced to fly more missions then they were demanded by the 27 Air Missions when all then men knew that it was not necessary for the allies have already won over the war. This shows bureaucracy because the men are risking their lives daily the yields in no direct accomplishment and is just being pushed by the unfairness of authorities.
Death: The biggest and most thought of game in the world is the end of life, for people who experience it, or just know that it is coming, they think and think of the possible ways to die. This has taught Yossarian to fully understand the fragility of life and he aviods every way of death. For him being in war, this means not going up in a plane where flak can be thrown into your skin with the internal organs hanging out. The dead man in Yossrians tent is a constant reminder that death is upon him and he will be the next dead man in the tent.
Heller show's the complexity of war by developing absurd or comical qualities to the characters and forming then changing the tone to something serious and critical the next minute. This can represent the life/death situations presented throughout the novel which reflects on Yossarians bipolar mind.
puns, absurdity, irony, and illusions
Puns: "Yossarian lost his nerve on the mission to Avignon because snowden lost his guts"
Absurdity: Heller wrote about women as being objects that are low in class (except Luciana) and are only shown as prostitutes for the men. the way that he wrote about them as well demoralized the way people today should respect women.
Irony: When Major Major becomes Major, it represents situational Irony and tells the reader that people that are unfortunate can easily become dysfunctional and helpless.
Allusions: Yosarian compares himself to all these allusions like tarzan to prove that he is a crazy person, yet he is proving himself sane by comparing himself to these powerful models.
Why does Heller give us pieces of this event throughout the novel, and why is Snowden's death so influential in Yossarian's life?
Snowden in a soldier who died early in combat, be dies when flak if shot through his suit and Yosarian devastated try's to save him but opens his flak suit and finds his guts literally spilling out. This horrifies Yosarian and is brought up several times in the novel to foreshadow the reason why Yosarian will do everything it takes to avoid getting killed. Then the death is fully exposed at the end of the novel in a gruesome explanation.
What was the Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade? What other incidents does Heller use to characterize the military?
The Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade (GLOC) is initiated as a response from Captain Black as he is frustrated with major major for being a "Communist" that has outranked him. Captain black is very patriotic and takes the country very seriously so he makes a paper for people to sign for most common encounters pledging to the country. This is mainly to annoy Mj. Major but Cpt Black finds it annoying when Major Major willing signs them so he takes the oaths to the next level and makes people sing the star spangled banner until Mj. de---coverley demands an end to the madness. Heller characterizes the military also by writing about how colonel Cathcart takes the parades seriously because it gives him honor as a Colonel, same goes for bomb patterns and is portraying the war to be about image.
Explain the significance of the soldier who saw everything twice and his impact on Yossarian
The Soldier who saw everything twice gave Yosarian the idea that he could use the symptom in order to keep stalling out of physical training in boot camp. The act of being mischievous is repeated throughout the story and shows how Yoarian uses every excuse possible to not do things that he does not want to.
Mess officer, controls a large syndicate where he is involved in many different countries of trade and everyone in the syndicate "Has a share". In the bureaucratic setting, Yosarian is known to change and by a non conformist to the rules in order to get what he wants. Milo is very much the same way where he ends up bombing his own squadron in part by a deal made with the germans to get rid of the Egyptian cotton. Yosarian learns that Milo is a hero wherever he goes when he flies to Cairo and does not get the rest he needs.
Notoriously known for almost getting shot down or crash landings, orr is always there to survive. He is Yosarian's roommate who is always focused on the little things especially fixing things like the stove. Yosarian is often bothered by him except before he goes missing when he realizes that even though he is a wimpy person, he has a heart and is a very nice guy. This humbles Yosarian and makes him appreciate life.
The medical officer at the hospital, he is scared to fly and so yosarian forges his name in mgwatts plane for Daneeka hoping for him to get grounded. Doc deneeka never returns the favor and responds with "Catch 22"
Mj. Major Major Major
Yosarian tackles Mj. Major in demand for reasons on why the dead man in his tent was gone. Yosarian also complains to him that colonel Cathcart is raising the number of missions. Mj. Major hopelessly replies with no help but understands the position that he was going through. Mj. Major's only response that there was nothing he could do because he did not want to break the rules that were given to him. They were both in a catch 22 scenario and the theme of bureaucracy being a problem that sides with death and ruthlessness.
Colonel catchcart is neither heroic or noble. He is incompetent and and cold hearted. For example, he raises the number of missions for the whole squadron so that nobody can leave with forty-five. Yosarian sees him as a piece of trash because of how he is treating him and his other soldiers. At the end, of the story colonel catchcart and Col. Korn come up with a deal to send him back just as long as he "Likes both of them" and gives speeches propagating the lies of how much of a good person he is. Yosarian thinks for a while because he is unsure if he could do that for someone he hated so much.
Mj. ------- de Coverley
He was a brave man, who would leave to fallen countries and go to dangerous places in order to kidnap italian laborers, and rent apartments for the enlisted men and to provide a place for officer on rest leave. The characters considered him to be "colossus" and people dared to speak to such a grand figure who would pitch horseshoes when he was in Pianoso. (Hero)
He is a lieutenant colonel and is Catchcart's sidekick at times. He is more mean and bold especially when designing the deal with yosarian to cover all the failed missions. Corn being the Side man of Cathcart is also on the side of raising missions. "its your fault.'yosarian argued 'for raising the number of missions.' 'no, its your fault for refusing to fly them' Colonel Corn retorted " (Heller, 431). But he Ironically plays the hero and works a deal with Cathcart to let him go if Yosarian speak good of them back in the states "We will issue orders returning you to the states-really, we will-and all you have to do in return is...'
'What must I do?'
He is despised by any because of his sinister thoughts and idealism. This makes him a coward, especially when colonel cathcart initiates the mission to Bologna in which Yosarian is greatly afraid of. For example of Blacks irrationality he says "Oh, boy! I can't wait to see those bastards' faces when they find out they're going to Bologna. Ha, ha ha! . . . Eat your livers, you bastards. This time you're really in for it" (heller 111)
