Examine risk factors: Is the client at high risk for developing drug/alcohol habits? Refer clients to education/community support groups. Explain the benefits of not partaking.
Use behavior-change strategies: Is the client ready to listen/apply your education? Be realistic with goal timelines, reinforce steps towards change, help client see their barriers, encourage them to maintain change, model good behaviors
Promote health lifestyle behaviors: Stress management strategies, sleep and rest well, eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, protect the skin from the sun, wear sport protective gear, practice safe sex, avoid alcohol, smoking, and drugs, get screened regularly.
