Scoring Range for New Ballard's Scoring
-1 through 5.
A lower score correlates with prematurity where a higher score correlates with post-maturity.

-Heel to Ear
Fully flexed is more mature.
Fully extended is score of 0.
Square Window (wrist)
More than 90 degrees to zero degrees.
Check for arm recoil.
No recoil is score of 0.
Strong recoil, almost to shoulder is a 4.
Angle of 180 degrees is a score of 0.
Angle of less 90 degrees is a score of 5.
Wrap arm around neck like scarf, score is 0.
If cannot pull arm up to midline, score is 4.
Heel to Ear
Heel halfway to ear, score is a 4.
From sticky and transparent to leathery with deep wrinkles.
Ranges from none at all to sparse, abundant, thinning, bald, or mostly bald.
None at all is score of 0.
Creases covering entire sole is score of 4.
Ranges from imperceptible to a full areola with a bud 5-10 mm in diameter.
Eyelids can be fused or fully open.
Pinna can be flat to stiff with thin to thick cartilage.
Scrotum can be flat, empty, smooth, to pendulous with deep rugae.
