Inspiration - First Step
Diaphragm muscles contract and flatten downwards.
Inspiration - Second Step
External intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribs upwards and outwards, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity/lungs.
Inspiration - Third Step
Air pressure in the lungs decreases below atmospheric pressure, allowing air to flow into the lungs (to equalize pressure)
Expiration - First Step
Diaphragm muscles relax and the diaphragm curves upwards.
Expiration - Second Step
Abdominal muscles contract, pushing the diaphragm upwards.
Expiration - Third Step
External intercostal muscles relax, causing the ribs to fall.
Expiration - Fourth Step
Internal intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribs downwards.
Expiration - Fifth Step
The volume of the thoracic cavity/lungs decreases, causing air to flow out of the lungs (to equalize pressure).
