Ch3 terms, SI for Dr Bertolini 105A.
Here are the terms from the Ch3 ppt (ionic/covalent naming, polyatomic ions etc) Good luck studying! --SI Leader Anjali
Terms in this set (42)
electrons are TRANSFERRED from one atom to another (ex: NaCl, a metal w a nonmetal)
electrons are SHARED between atoms (ex: water; two nonmetals)
H2, N2, F2, O2, I2, Cl2, Br2
(Have No Fear Of Ice CoLd BeeR; a popular mnemonic)
Molecular elements (other than diatomics)
P4, S8, Se8
naming ionic compounds
1. Cation named first (same name as parent ion)
2. Anion named as: (parent element root) + -ide
(if the metal can form more than one cation, then you need Roman numeral following it in parenthesis)
hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate)
hydrogen sulfite (bisulfite)
hydrogen sulfate (bisulfate)
(O2) 2- [only forms with group 1 and group 2 metals]
Charge of Alkali Metals ions
Charge of Alkaline Earth Metal ions
Charge of Scandium family ions (Sc, Y, La, Ac)
Charge of Al ion
Charge of Zn ion
Charge of Ag ion
Naming Molecular Compounds
Same rules as ionic, but use PREFIXES to indicate the number of each atom. (Mono is never used for the first element).
Naming Mercury Compounds Practice
a. Mercury (I) Chloride
b. Mercury (II) Chloride
Easy way to think about it: the Roman numeral corresponds to the charge on EACH individual atom. Ex: for (Hg2)2+, there are two mercury atoms with a total of 2+ charge. You can think about it as each of these two atoms have + charge on it (represented by I Roman numeral).
Conversely, for (Hg)2+ there is only one mercury atom with a 2+ charge, thus it can be represented by II Roman numeral.
Naming acids WITHOUT oxygen
hydro[anionic root]ic acid
(ex: hydrochloric acid)
Naming acids WITH oxygen
-if the end of the anion is -ite --> -ous
-if the end of the anion is -ate --> -ic
H2SO3 : sulfurous acid
H2SO4 : sulfuric acid
What elements are liquid at 25 degrees C?
What elements are gas at 25 degrees C?
Noble gases and N2, Cl2, O2, F2, H2
a formula with the lowest whole-number ratio of elements in a compound
the formula with the actual number of atoms in the molecule. Molecular formulas are multiples of empirical formulas.
