Sound Devices Used in Poetry

Rhyme
Correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, esp. when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry.
Rhyme Scheme
A pattern of end rhymes that occurs consistently throughout a stanza or poem
Rhythm
a strong, regular, repeated pattern of sound (or movement)
Meter
the basic rhythmic structure of a verse or lines in verse
Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in a group of words close together.
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds in a group of words close together.
Onomatopoeia
A figure of speech in which natural sounds are imitated in the sounds of words.
