1. Artwork -
Any material other than photos or text to be printed in the book.
2. Background -
Covering a page with black or colored ink so that no margins are white.
3. Bleed -
Photo extending to the edge of a page on one or more sides.
4. Body Copy -
Text on a page as distinguished from headlines or captions.
5. Boldface -
Type that is heavier than the type around it.
6. Caption -
Wording that explains or identifies a photo, usually set in smaller type.
7. Close Register -
Any different elements (i.e. photo and caption) set closer than one pica apart.
8. Copyreading -
Reading copy for errors and marking them for the printer.
9. Crop -
To eliminate portions of a photo to improve its composition.
10. Die -
Metal plate used to stamp a design onto a cover or page.
11. Divider -
Page or spread introducing a section of the book (i.e. sports).
12. Double Page Spread -
Two facing pages.
13. Duotone -
Photo printed in black plus another color.
14. Embossed Cover -
Cover in two dimensions with raised surfaces that can then be silk screened or left blind.
15. Enlargement -
Making larger the size of photos, copy, or art.
16. Flush Left or Right -
Type that is set so as to be even on the left or right side.
17. Folio -
Page number in the book.
18. Full Color -
Complete range of color made by overprinting transparent yellow, magenta, cyan, and black.
19. Ghosting -
Screening a photo so that it will reproduce very faintly.
20. Gutter -
Binding edge where pages are glued together.
21. Headline -
Title to identify materials on a page, usually in larger type than other copy.
22. Introduction -
Opening pages of the book, usually establishing theme.
23. Italics -
Type that is slanted as opposed to upright, often used as a contrast.
24. Justify -
Spacing text to make lines of equal length so that the margin is even.
25. Ladder -
Plan of the order of pages in the book.
26. Layout -
Arrangement of photos, artwork, copy, and white space on the pages.
27. Lead -
(pronounced like seed) First word or sentence of a copy block, usually of compelling interest.
28. Margin -
White space in between elements as well as between elements and the page edges.
29. Montage -
Several photos butted together to appear as one.
30. Panel -
Solid or screened area, or group of photos butted together into a block or strip.
31. Pica -
Printer's unit of measure, six picas per inch.
32. Point -
Printer's unit of vertical measure, 12 points per pica and 72 points per inch.
33. Proportion -
Two items of the same shape are considered to be in proportion. A photo to be enlarged must be in
proportion to the layout space.
34. Reverse -
To make art or type white on a dark background or photo.
35. Rule Line -
Black or colored line used to accent elements on a page.
36. Sans Serif -
Type without decorative strokes on the ends of the letters.
37. Signature -
16 consecutive pages folded from a single large sheet to create a unit such as pages 1-16, 17-32, etc.
38. Spot Color -
Printing in a color other than black, used to emphasize type, art, or as tint blocks.
39. Theme -
Central idea or concept; narrative thread that unifies or coordinates the book.
40. Title Page -
Usually the first page of the book, displaying title, year, school, address, and volume number.
