Why do all living things need energy?
Everything needs energy. All cells need to energy to carry out their basic functions. Such as making protein.
How do plants obtain energy?
They obtain energy from the sun.
An insect eats a leaf. Explain how the insect depends on the sun for energy.
The leaf captures the energy from the sun and the bug eats it so he gets the energy indirectly.
What chemical equation sums up the events of photosynthesis.
6CO2 + 6 h20 --- C6H206 + 6O2
What are substances needed for photosynthesis? What are the substances that are produced in photosynthisis?
carbon dioxide+water = sugar+oxgen
Would you expect a plant to produce more oxgen on a cloudy or sunny day? Explain.
more sunlight = more photosynthisis
Less sunlight = less photosythisis
What happens during respiration?
During respiration, cells break down simple food molicules such as sugar and releases energy.
What is the equasion for respiration.
C6H12O6+6O2 = 6CO2+6H2O
SUGAR+OXYGEN= CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + ENERGY
Compare the equasion for respiration and photosynthesis.
During photosynthisis, plants use carbon dioxide, and realease oxygen, but in respiration it takes in oxyen and realeses carbon dioxide.
Ezplain why cellular respiration adds carbon dioxide to the atmoushere, but photosynthesis doesnt?
Respiration does because to releases CO2 and takes in oxygen, but in photothinthesis it takes in CO2 and releases oxygen.
What is the prosses in which cells obtain energy without using oxygen?
How would athetes be affected if this prosses did not take place.
ONce their mussels ran out of oxygen, they would colapse or stop.
Is the prosses more likely to occur during a short run or a long distance run? Explain your answer.
It would be more likely to occur on a long distance run because you are going farther, so you are moving more.
What are the three stages of the cell cycle.
Interphase, mitosis, and cyktinesis.
Summarize what happens to the chromosomes during the stage of the cell cyclein which the nucleus divides. In clude the term prophase, metaphase, anaphase, ands telophase.
prophase: spindle fibers form a bridge and chromosomes form
metaphase: spindle fibers line up across the center of the cell
anaphase: centrmenes split and cell streches apart
telephase: two nuclar envolopes form
Look at figure 12. What is the role of spindle fibers during cell division?
Chromosomes move along the spindle fibers.
List the nitrogen bases of DNA.
Adenine, thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine.
Describe how the nitrogen bases pair with the DNA molecule.
Adenine is always with thymine; and cytisine is always with Guanine
One section of a strand of DNA has the base sequence of AGATTC. What would the base sequece be on the other base.
What is cancer?
Is a deseise in which some body cells grow and divide uncontrollably, damaging the body.
How are cancer cells differnt from normal cells?
A cancer cell is differnt because cells dont divide in harmony, they over mutate.
What is the relationship between cancer and DNA?
When there is a damage to the DNA it cause the cell to mutate.
What are the three ways cancer is treated?
Surgery, drugs, and radiation.
Which method is almost always apart of the treatment for small tomors that have not spread to ther parts of the body. Explain why this method is chosen.
Surgery is usally the first step because you can remove it hopefully before it speads.
Why is the commination of methods typically used to treat cancet that has spread beyond the originally tumor?
To increase the chance of success.
