His mother was dead and his father was shy and introverted. They live above a butcher's store. His father works at a fish market and his sister Sophie is 23 years old and works at a cafeteria in the Bronx. Sophie takes care of the house.
Why did George quit school?
He ran out of patience. He felt that the teachers did not respect him.
How does George feel about quitting school?
He is ashamed and doesn't like to admit that he never finished school.
What does George do to try and 'pick up his education'?
He tried to go to night school but felt that the teachers would be telling him what to do. He tried to sign up for summer school but felt that the kids in his class would be too young. He tried to read books on his own but didn't get very far.
What did George do during the day?
He cleaned the house. He had coffee by himself. He listened to the ball game. He read old copies of the World Almanac. He read the News and the Mirror, but mostly stayed in his room all day.
What did George do at night?
After walking in the neighborhood George walked for a couple of blocks until he came to a darkly lit little park. He sat there thinking about his future.
