3 types of NRM's
1) world accommodating
2) world affirming
3) world rejecting

World accommodating

Are indifferent to the current zeitgeist for example Jehovah's witnesses.

World affirming

Are positive about the zeitgeist and aim to improve the experience of the present life e.g. Scientology.

World rejecting

Are against the zeitgeist and aim to withdraw from society and can sometimes end in mass suicide e.g. Jonestown

Marginality: NRM's increase because of marginal groups; unemployed, homeless etc
Relative deprivation: middle class have achieved material success but are lacking spiritual development (spiritual void)
Social change when there is social change people turn to NRM's for guidance.

1. Members were mainly highly educated and from happy middle class backgrounds
2. Poor retention rate too controlling/restrictive
3. People joined if they were state of crisis.
