Physical Changes
A change in the form or appearance of matter that does not change it into a different kind of matter (ex. bread become into smaller pieces.)
Change Of State
A physical change in one kind of matter that describes how it reacts with other kind matter
Melting point
The teperature at which a solid melts, or becomes a liquid
Boiling point
The teperature at which a liquid becomes a gass
Evaporate
To change from a liquid to a gas at a temperature below the boilling point
Condense
To change from a gas to a liquid
Mixture
A blend of two or more Materials or substances that have been mixed together physically without being combined cemically
Solute
The substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution (Salt crystal)
Solubility
How much solute will dissolve in a certain amount of solvent at a certain temperature
Chemical Change
A change in one kind of matter that results in the formation of one or more chemically different kinds of matter
Matter
Anything that takes up space and has mass
Physical Property
Characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Balance
A tool for measuring mass
Volume
A measure of the amount of space an object takes up
Density
A measure of the amount of mass per unit volume of a substance
States of Matter
The physical form of a substance
Solid
The state of matter that has a definet volume and shape
Liquid
The state of matter that has a definet volume but no definet shape
Gas
The state of matter that has no definet volume or shape
Chemical Property
A property of a substance that is made up of the atoms of more than one element and that forms as the result of a chemical reaction
Atoms
A tiny building block of matter; the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down chemically into simpler substances and is made up of only one type of atom
Periodic Table
A chart in which elements are arranged according to their chemical properties
Metal
An element that is a solid, it's usually shiny, and is a good conductor of heat and electricity
Molecule
The smallest unit of a substance that can exist alone and still have the properties of that substance
Compound
A substance that is made up of the atoms of more than one element that forms as the result of a chemical reaction
