What is the purpose of this essay?
Nagel wanted to show that materialism is right about some things (everything is physical), but not all that it claims (the part about being able to explain everything fully, relying solely on the physical. Doesn't work for adult rational humans because of two reasons
What are the two reasons?
1) You could be thinking of something without displaying any behavior at all
2) You can and often do lie with your behavior
Why does Nagel choose a bat for the topic?
A bat is a mammal so it is assumed to have conscious experiences but they view the world in a way that human can never do (i.e. sonar)
What is Reductionism? What are some examples of it?
Reductionism: Any object or phenomenon at one level of science can be reduced to and fully explained by a more fundamental level of science
