Class: Anti-coagulant
Use: prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and atrial fibrillation
Contraindications: uncontrolled bleeding and HTN
Side Effects: consistent intake of foods high in Vitamin K, use soft toothbrush, do not floss, use electric razor

Monitor PT/INR for therapeutic levels, antidote is Vitamin K. Hold longer pressure on any venipuncture sites

Drug type: Neuro (works by causing vasoconstriction)
Use: Migraines
Route: PO and SC
S/E: sedation, nausea, tingling, flushing

Do not take with symptoms of angina or CAD, take at onset of migraine, do not take for more than 3-4 headaches/month. NOT A PREVENTATIVE

Allopurinol (Zyloprim)
Type: Musculoskeletal

Use: treats elevated uric acid levels (gout)
S/E: rash ( discontinue at first sign of rash), GI

Avoid large doses of vitamin C, low purine diet (avoid wine, beer, lunch meat, red meat)Hydration is important, gout is common in with patients on diuretics for a long time.
allopurinol S/E and nursing considerations
Levothyroxine
use: treat hypothyroidism (synthetic T4)
S/E: weight loss, anxiety, tachycardia, palpitations (monitor TSH, T3, T4, TSH will be high, T4 low)

take without food at the same time every morning. monitor HR with cardio disease which can stress the heart
Levothyroxine S/E and nursing considerations
Furosemide (Lasix)
Type: loop diuretic

Use: edema associated with heart failure, hypertension, acute pulmonary edema
S/E: hyperuricemia (gout) and hypokalemia

monitor daily weights so dehydration doesn't occur, monitor potassium levels
