The different ethnic groups mix together, but each group keeps its own identity. They don't take on the traits of other countries just like each ingredient in a salad bowl is mixed with the others, but still a separate ingredient. They accept and use American customs such as foods, clothing , holidays.

Some people marry people from a different ethnic group and so they merge into one. Other people don't intermarry and they keep their own traits and ways of doing things. America at this time was open to new ways and accepting the immigrants' ideas and ways, but the immigrants also took on many of America's customs.
